Flying the Piper
Cub on floats is hard when you are on a land base a half mile away from
the water and a town between the airport and the seaport. So we have
the Cub on a dolly. We tow the dolly onto the runway centerline,
disconnect it, start the engine and make the take-off roll on the
dolly. When there is flying speed the Cub lifts off the dolly and the
dolly rolls to a stop. After giving rides out on the Half Moon Bay
Harbor or sightseeing over San Francisco, we land back on the grass
beside the runway. The recovery helpers tow the dolly out, lever the
tail down, run the dolly under then raise the tail and center the plane
on the dolly. Mission complete. We take off before the airport
manager comes to
work and come back after he has gone home so he won’t have to be on
record as approving the operation. We’ve seen him standing across
the road watching, but he is not officially at work. The fire
truck guys
think it’s cool.
